Hands-Only CPR Announcement
APRIL 2008
American Heart Association released the “Hands-Only CPR” initiative this month. The Hands only CPR initiative is meant to simplify CPR and increase the likelihood of a trained or non-trained rescuer helping after witnessing a sudden collapse. The Hands-Only CPR initiative promotes calling 911 and starting chest compressions when a victim has a sudden collapse and isn’t breathing. Unlike traditional CPR, Hands-Only CPR does not require rescue breathing.
The bottom line is that this is not a change in standards. The current certification, or traditional CPR, will still be taught in AHA’s HeartSaver and Health Care Provider courses. We at EMS Safety have discussed this topic in our CPR curriculum since 2005. Hands-Only CPR will be discussed in AHA training courses, but the traditional CPR will still be taught.
